General Orders Number 57, Headquarters, 3rd Brigade (Separate), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), APO San Francisco 96490, dated 10 January 1972, marked "CORRECTED COPY" — award of the Army Commendation Medal.

McGrew's entry, exactly as it appears in the order:

McGREW, HOWARD L. — SPECIALIST FOUR, UNITED STATES ARMY Co D 2nd Bn 8th Cav 15 Jan – 15 Dec 71

Authority: by direction of the Secretary of the Army under the provisions of Army Regulation 672-5-1. Reason: "For meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against a hostile enemy force in the Republic of Vietnam."

This is a batch order — the same General Order also lists several other Company D, 2/8 Cav soldiers (1LT Richard E. LaValley, SP4 Henry M. Cruz, SP4 Kenneth M. Weaver, SP4 Robert Recendes, SP4 David E. Garcia, SP5 Oliver J. Catterson, SGT William M. Dishuke) alongside soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry and other 3rd Brigade units, each with their own dates-of-service line.

The award postdates McGrew's DD214 (effective 20 Dec 71) by three weeks, which is why it doesn't appear on that document's decorations block.
