Overview
FSB Guin (also: Guinn) was a 1st Cavalry Division fire support base in Binh Tuy Province (Military Region 3, III Corps), established by the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry on 4 September 1970. It is documented in the firebase gazetteer under references AD515205 and AD516259.
Guin followed FSB Powder Ridge, located approximately 67 kilometres to the northwest. The scale of that move — too far to cover on foot, across Binh Tuy terrain — meant the battalion shifted by helicopter. In the four days between leaving Powder Ridge (31 August) and standing up Guin (4 September), CPL Craig Thomas Waterman of Range Platoon was killed on 3 September 1970. AD0516259 (1st Cav Div ORLL, period ending 31 Oct 1970) FSB table confirms: "GUIi ZT 100190 26 Oct 2-8 Cav (qod by 199th)" — 2/8 Cav departed 26 October 1970, taken over by the 199th Infantry Brigade. The unit moved directly to FSB Silver (YT829043), which AD0516259 records as reopened by 2-8 Cav on 26 Oct. CPL Craig Waterman (Range Platoon, D Co) was killed on 3 September 1970, the day before Guin stood up, during the 4-day gap between Powder Ridge and Guin.
