Fought off an attack during a company extraction under fire
Shortly before CPT Henry Colavita took command of D Company, Delta was extracting from the field following a search-and-destroy operation when the enemy attacked as troop numbers on the ground thinned between helicopter lifts. Adams, then a platoon sergeant, fought well and killed several attackers. He put himself in for the Medal of Honor; awarded a Silver Star instead, since no one else on the ground could support the higher award. See soldiers/colavita-henry.

Served as acting First Sergeant while 1SG Cruz was on leave
With 1SG Ramon "Blinky" Cruz on a 60-day reenlistment leave, Adams served as D Company's acting First Sergeant for roughly four months. "Old school" and widely disliked by the troops per Colavita, who nonetheless found they "got along just fine." During this period, Adams handled two perimeter-security incidents personally at LZ Rita: waking a sleeping bunker guard by hand, and firing a single M-79 warning round at a delinquent listening post that grazed soldier Jim Nix's nose. Per Colavita, when 1SG Cruz returned from his reenlistment leave roughly four months after departing, Colavita "would be sorry to see Bruce Adams go" -- worded ambiguously as to whether Adams left the company or simply returned to a platoon sergeant role. Date is an approximation based on the ~4-month gap from Cruz's departure (~Nov 1968).
