SP4 Stephen Alsup began his tour with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. He was 20 years old, drafted from Rumford, Rhode Island.

Wounded in action — Tay Ninh Province, March 18, 1970
SP4 Stephen John Alsup was wounded in action on March 18, 1970, in Tay Ninh Province. At 1110 hours the 2/8 Cavalry received small arms, automatic weapons, and B-40 fire from an estimated platoon-size enemy force from the north, northeast, and south at XT045833, approximately 7km northeast of Firebase Illingworth — the battalion's base, which had opened the previous day. Contact broke at 1125 with 14 US wounded. The following day a search of the area revealed 19 NVA killed in two fresh graves. CPL Michael Jackson, a fellow D Company mortarman, had been killed the day before. Alsup had been in-country five months and seventeen days.
