Flown to FB Carolyn
Flown to FB Carolyn and stayed overnight in a bunker while the artillery ran fire missions through the night. Told that D Co. was operating with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment near FB Carolyn, close to the Cambodian border.

First day in the field -- night contact near FB Carolyn
Joined the company in the field by log bird (supply helicopter), working alongside the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Assigned to a platoon and issued field gear. That night, the unit's night defensive position (tracks formed in a circle, foxholes dug between them) took eight incoming NVA mortar rounds -- none close -- before the unit relocated and left a platoon behind in the woodline for an ambush. Using a starlight scope, that platoon spotted four NVA soldiers moving in the open field the unit had just vacated; a platoon of tanks and a platoon of infantry engaged, killing one NVA soldier and capturing two AK-47 rifles, with no U.S. casualties.

Arrived in-country at Bien Hoa
Landed at Bien Hoa Air Base after a nearly twenty-hour flight with stops in Alaska and Japan -- two days after his 20th birthday. Held at the 90th Replacement Battalion awaiting assignment, then sent to the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) rear at Bien Hoa for about a week of "Cherry School" orientation.

Assigned to D Co., 2/8 Cav -- diverted through Song Be
Assigned to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry along with four other new arrivals. Flown to Song Be expecting to find the company there, only to learn D Co. had just moved to Tay Ninh. Spent the night at Song Be.
