Killed in an engagement — November 18, 1968
PFC Cromie was killed in an engagement — direct contact with the enemy, not a standoff shelling — while serving with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry (Airmobile), 1st Cavalry Division, during Operation Sheridan Sabre. Per CPT Henry Colavita's own memoir (Colavita commanded D Co at the time), Cromie was hit by RPG fragments. He was the earliest of the archive's D Company losses of that operation. PFC Cromie was 20 years old. Colavita's memoir also candidly recounts that, still fairly new to command, he did not realize Cromie was dead until he asked a platoon leader — weeks later — why he hadn't seen him around, having assumed he was perhaps on R&R.
