Sourced from the 2/8 Cav after-action report for 4 November 1965 (KIA/AA Rpt 4Nov65.pdf), in which "FSG Marshall (Recon Plt Sgt)" leads the "Buckeye" element, and from his former platoon leader Franklin Trapnell's eulogy in the Angry Skipper Association newsletter (Vol. 1, Issue 8, June 2008).

Recon Platoon Sergeant, D Company — Fort Benning
Marshall and Lt Franklin Trapnell were Platoon Sergeant and Platoon Leader of the Reconnaissance Platoon, Company D, 1st Battalion–511th Infantry, 11th Air Assault Division — soon redesignated Company D, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry. He held the Recon Platoon Sergeant role for about eighteen months, including the unit's first year in Vietnam.

Led "Buckeye" — 4 Nov 1965 action near Position Cavalair
As Recon Platoon Sergeant, Marshall led the "Buckeye" element (with Sgt Julien and about ten men) forward from Position Cavalair to secure the prisoners, the camp, and the LZ during the 4 November 1965 action. He used to say that when he was leading, he never lost a man.
