The D/2-8 company daily journal records a contact with 2-3 NVA at grid YD293319 on July 1, 1968: one US WIA at 0930 who died of wounds at 1230, one NVA KIA, and one AK-47 rifle captured (serial number 51747). The same day, 1315 hours, a separate NVA KIA was found buried in a bunker at YD296319, attributed to a 1st Platoon ambush from June 28. Virtual Wall independently records the cause as hostile fire, gun or small arms, in Quang Tri Province -- matching the journal's account exactly. The journal does not name individuals, but the exact date match, single-casualty count, matching cause of death, and Delta Company specificity make this the strongest candidate identification of the four D Company losses reviewed from this source. Ross's date of birth, July 1, 1947, means he was killed on his 21st birthday. He had been in-country over eight months.
