The D/2-8 company daily journal records a contact with NVA in a bunker complex at grid YD324393, 1345 hours, 4 June 1968: one US KIA (body not recovered, carried missing in action), one US WIA, and one NVA KIA. Incoming 60mm mortar fire followed. Brigade intelligence placed a 10th Sapper Battalion command post nearby at YD323392. The journal names no individuals.

Killed in action — body recovered and identified, June 7, 1968
PFC Brian Winner's roster date of death, June 7, 1968, is in Quang Tri Province, hostile fire, gun or small arms (Virtual Wall). The journal records that a US KIA was found and identified by the platoon leader on 7 June at grid YD325391 as the man carried missing since 4 June (partially decomposed); five NVA KIA from the intervening 5-6 June actions and an SKS rifle were also found in the area. This recovery/ identification date, not the June 4 date of the actual contact, is what the roster records as his date of death -- the journal's model case for the report-processing lag between when a man was hit and when his status was finalized. He had been in-country just over three weeks.
