Killed in action — contact north of FSB Fanning
CPL Hall was killed during contact with an NVA bunker complex north of Route 1, east of Gia Rai Mountain. Range Platoon had discovered a fresh NVA latrine and was attempting to withdraw when enemy fire erupted from concealed bunkers. SSG Stan Dillon placed Hall to his left approximately ten meters before a Chinese Claymore detonated at ground level. CPL Hall, CPL Danny Drinkard, and CPL James Cardwell were killed. SSG Dillon was severely wounded. Per Dillon's account: "Joe Hall came up from the rear and asked me, 'Where do you want me to go, Sgt. Dillon?' I placed him to the left of me about 10 meters."
