Severely wounded — contact north of FSB Fanning
During contact with an NVA base camp north of Route 1, east of Gia Rai Mountain, SSG Dillon — Range Platoon Sergeant — was severely wounded when the platoon walked into a fortified bunker complex on the north bank. CPL James Cardwell, CPL Danny Drinkard, and CPL Joseph Hall were killed in the same action. Dillon later provided a written deposition detailing the engagement.
