Security patrol contact — Nui Ba Mountains
Hilts led the security patrol around Range Platoon's night defense perimeter in the foothills of the Nui Ba Mountains. The squad made contact with enemy forces; PFC William Makowski, the M-60 gunner, was mortally wounded. Hilts and RTO Jean "Dizzy" Blais dragged Makowski behind cover of fallen trees. Hilts sustained a bullet or shrapnel ricochet through his helmet during the action.
